About Us
Who We Are
Zero Plastic Straw Community (ZPSC) is a community-based non-governmental organization founded on October 11, 2021, with a passionate mission to protect our oceans, environment, and overall planet by advocating against the use of single-use plastics—especially plastic straws. We are committed to raising awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and promoting sustainable alternatives through environmental education and community engagement. At the core of our work is the belief that everyone has a role to play in creating a cleaner, healthier future. By encouraging individuals, institutions, and businesses to reduce their plastic footprint, we aim to spark meaningful behavioral change across Nigeria and beyond.
Together, with the efforts of individuals and communities, we believe we can make a lasting difference.
Our specific focus on eradicating plastic straw usage in Nigeria reflects our belief that even small actions can lead to big environmental impacts. Through campaigns, workshops, and educational programs, we empower people—especially youth—to make conscious choices that protect our waterways and marine ecosystems. As we continue to grow, we envision a society where single-use plastics are no longer a norm, and environmental stewardship becomes a shared value.
On November 6, 2021, we convened a crucial discussion on one of our planet’s most urgent threats: plastic pollution. Environmental experts, activists, and engaged community members came together to shed light on the devastating impacts of plastics—and to champion real-world solutions.
From microplastics in our oceans to waste management challenges, the event sparked meaningful dialogue and actionable strategies to reduce our plastic footprint. This collective effort reinforced the power of community-driven change in protecting our environment.
The fight against plastic pollution continues—join the movement today.
For World Environment Day 2022, we teamed up with a local school to empower the next generation of eco-champions. Through interactive workshops, hands-on activities, and inspiring discussions, students explored the vital role of environmental conservation and sustainable living.
From planting initiatives to creative upcycling projects, the day was filled with energy and actionable learning—proving that small steps today can lead to big impacts tomorrow.
Together, we’re nurturing a future where young leaders drive meaningful change for our planet.
Last year, we had the honor of hosting Youth Climate Action Day—an inspiring gathering of young leaders dedicated to building a sustainable future. This dynamic event showcased the passion, innovation, and unwavering commitment of youth driving real climate solutions.
From thought-provoking discussions to hands-on workshops, the day was a testament to the power of young voices in shaping a greener tomorrow. Together, we amplified bold ideas, fostered collaboration, and ignited action for a healthier planet.
The vibrant energy of Lagos set the stage for the groundbreaking Atupa Fire Summit 2024, where passionate volunteers, forward-thinking students, and leading sustainability experts converged to reimagine our environmental future. Under the powerful theme “Blazing a Trail to Sustainability,” the summit sparked dynamic conversations at the intersection of creativity, technology, and environmental action.
More than just a conference, this gathering served as:
A launchpad for innovative eco-solutions
A melting pot of interdisciplinary ideas
A catalyst for community-driven environmental change
Participants left equipped with actionable strategies and inspired to become sustainability champions in their own circles. The fire has been lit – now we’re passing the torch.
